GDC publishes policy position statement on dual registration requirements for oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMFS) and other regulated healthcare professionals

30 January, 2023
We have today published a position statement which explains when oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMFSs) who are registered with the General Medical Council also require GDC registration for their work. This statement is also relevant to some other regulated healthcare professionals, for example appropriately qualified clinical scientists (such as maxillofacial prosthetists or reconstructive scientists) who are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

We recognise that the work of OMFSs and some other healthcare professionals may include aspects of dentistry. The position statement provides clarity around the requirements for, and exemptions from, GDC registration – as set out in our legislation. This also covers registration requirements relating to dental training and supervision.

We would like to thank the stakeholders who have provided input during the development of this position statement, including the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Institute of Maxillofacial Prosthetists and Technologists.
