GDC enhances benefits and protections for Associates

We have today announced changes to our Associate engagement after a comprehensive review.

Following the review, we have determined that, going forward, we will engage those performing a number of Associate roles as workers.

This review was conducted in light of the Somerville v Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Court of Appeal ruling on worker status (2022) and our decision reflects the GDC’s commitment to ensuring our practices align with the developing legal framework.

"We value the expertise and dedication our Associates bring to dental regulation, and these changes ensure we maintain the flexibility that benefits everyone and is aligned with current legal requirements,” said Gurvinder Soomal, Chief Operating Officer at the General Dental Council.

“We hope that this transition is an important step in bringing clarity to our engagement practices with our associates whilst recognising the vital role they play in the GDC's work."

Key changes and benefits

Worker status will bring a number of significant benefits, including historic holiday pay and matched pension contributions.

Other benefits include access to the GDC pension scheme through auto-enrolment (subject to eligibility requirements), future annual leave entitlement paid as a supplementary payment upon meeting threshold requirements and learning and development opportunities.

Recognising past contributions

These enhancements will not change how Associates work day-to-day. Associates will continue to work with their established Associate staff leads, and the mutual flexibility that characterises these professional relationships will be maintained.

There remains no obligation for Associates to accept any particular assignment, nor for the GDC to offer work, preserving the flexibility that benefits both parties.

Next steps

Associates identified as in scope for this transition will receive detailed communication directly from the GDC, including a new contract that they should return by 1 September and comprehensive guidance on the process.

We have established dedicated communication channels to address questions and provide support throughout the implementation period. Associates can contact their Associate Manager or e-mail [email protected] for assistance.
