Consultation on our next corporate strategy
Principle-based standards and guidance framework
Our role includes providing a clear, accessible and forward-looking standards and guidance framework that supports professionalism and good decision-making for the benefit of patients and the public. We want to enhance our guidance and the support dental professionals to deliver safe and effective care to their patients.
We plan to develop and deliver standards and guidance in a way that:
- empowers professional decision-making
- encourages positive professionalism, good practice and continuous improvement to achieve positive patient outcomes
- sets clear expectations of dental professionals, based on patient needs and public expectations, and
- promotes patient safety by focussing on what makes things go right.
Our proposals include continuing to develop and then maintaining a new professional guidance framework, based on the principles of professionalism, and we plan to do it by:
- capturing and responding to emerging issues, trends and information needs
- coordinating and developing a range of professional guidance and supporting materials to support professionalism, and
- actively promoting and embedding professional guidance.
Responding to changes and challenges in dentistry
We recognise the need to be more agile in response to advances in dentistry to collaborate with others to identify and address challenges, including providing guidance for the dental team on emerging issues and proactively tackling issues that are affecting the health, safety and wellbeing of the public.
We plan to work with others to respond to changes and challenges by:
- continuing to build a robust evidence-base to inform our approach and identify the areas where we can contribute and advance sector-wide insight
- continuously improving our understanding of the working patterns of dental professionals, and sharing data and analyses with others
- working to build trust to strengthen our ability to lead and influence
- ensuring our approach to tackling illegal practice keeps pace with changes in the way dental services are being accessed
- developing a better understanding of inequalities in access to dental care, experiences and outcomes and our role in helping to address them.
