Information to support non-dental healthcare professionals to understand when dual registration is required

The GDC regulates dentists and dental care professionals. However, in certain circumstances, non-dental healthcare professionals who are already registered with another UK healthcare regulator may need to consider whether they also require GDC registration for their work. This may be because their work includes aspects of dentistry, or is linked to dental training and supervision.

These circumstances mainly apply to oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMFS) registered with the General Medical Council. However, they could apply to some other groups of professionals as well - for example, appropriately qualified clinical scientists (such as maxillofacial prosthetists or reconstructive scientists) who are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Our position statement on this matter provides information to support oral and maxillofacial surgeons and other healthcare professionals understand whether they need to register with the GDC.
