Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion

We are now consulting on our proposed corporate strategy.

You will find below a summary of our plans to promote equality, diversity and inclusion across all aspects of our work as a regulator and an employer.

Consultation on our next corporate strategy

Meeting diverse needs

We have made progress over recent years in developing our understanding of the diverse needs of dental professionals and students and how we can support them, but there is more to do, particularly to ensure that we are meeting those needs.

We plan to meet diverse needs of professionals and patients by:

  • improving our understanding of the existence and prevalence of discrimination in dentistry and what we can do to address it
  • establishing a clear and effective guidance framework that supports professionalism and helps ensure that the workplace is safe and inclusive
  • helping to ensure an inclusive dental workforce by making our registration processes and our digital communications are fully accessible.

Ensuring our processes are fair and equal

Our proposed strategy includes plans to gather and use evidence to improve our understanding of the impact of fitness to practise on dental professionals, including looking at factors related to equality, diversity and inclusion, to ensure our processes are fair and equitable.

Our plans include testing and evaluating our processes by:

  • analysing our registration and fitness to practise data to explore and identify equality, diversity and inclusion related correlations and any change over time
  • improving our understanding who is raising concerns and complaints and identifying any trends which may provide insight into accessibility
  • listening to user voices to inform our efforts to mitigate the risk of bias and/or discrimination and to test and evaluate our responses.

Continue to build an inclusive workplace

As well as being a regulator of dental professionals we are also an employer. Our proposed strategy includes details of how we will continue to build an inclusive workplace which values diversity, and proactively identifies and challenges inequality and discrimination.

We plan to continue to build an inclusive workplace by:

  • understanding and acting on what our employee data is telling us
  • ensuring our managers and staff are equipped to lead and work in diverse teams
  • challenging discrimination and inequality through development and implementation of a clear and appropriate policy framework.
