As the UK-wide regulator of dental professionals, the GDC quality-assures dental education and training programmes in all four nations of the UK so that newly qualified dental professionals are fit to register with the GDC and practise independently as safe beginners. The Review of Education reports provide an overview of GDC’s education quality-assurance activity.

We have today announced the full re-starting of Parts 1 and 2 of the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE), following its suspension in March 2020 due to COVID-19. We also published the full 2022 Part 1 and Part 2 schedule of exams.

Today the General Dental Council (GDC) published research that was jointly commissioned with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and supported by regulators of health professions across the UK to understand how the concept of seriousness is defined and applied by healthcare regulators in their fitness to practice (FtP) function.

The Department of Health and Social Care is requesting views on the arrangements for deciding which health and care professions should be regulated in future. Its consultation 'Healthcare regulation: deciding when statutory regulation is appropriate' is now open and provides san opportunity to give perspectives on this fundamental question of patient protection.

The number of dentists on the UK Register, following the recent annual renewal period, has remained stable and in line with the trajectory of previous years. On the morning after removals there were 42,215 dentists on the Register, an increase on the equivalent figure for 2021.

The Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) was suspended in early 2020 as part of the response to COVID-19. It has not been possible, until now, to resume the exam. We have, today, announced that one sitting of the Part 2 exam will take place in January 2022.
