Fiona Sandom

Fiona Sandom

Fiona began her career in dentistry in 1990 and qualified as a Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist by 1999. She later completed an MSc in Medical Education and a Doctorate in Health Service Research. Fiona works part‑time in a busy NHS practice and is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Lead at Bangor University. She also holds senior leadership roles with Health Education and Improvement Wales and is an Education Associate for the GDC. 

A past President and Chair of the British Association of Dental Therapists, she has represented the profession nationally, including on changes to medicines legislation. Her career spans practice, hospital, community and personal dental services, with a particular interest in treating anxious patients using inhalation sedation. She has led the development, commissioning and implementation of Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy programmes at Bangor University. 

Fiona holds multiple fellowships, serves on several professional boards and charities, has received two Oral and Dental Research Trust DCP Awards, is a Lifetime Honorary Member of the British Association of Dental Therapy and was awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2025 for services to dental therapy and the NHS in Wales.
