Special Care Dentistry

Special Care Dentistry is the provision of oral health care services for adults who are unable to accept/receive routine dental care because of a physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, medical, emotional, or social impairment or disability or a combination of these factors.

A specialist in Special Care Dentistry will provide high quality comprehensive oral care for people with complex and/or additional needs, and advocate to improve their oral health. Care is provided in a variety of locations which can include dental practices, hospitals, in patients' homes, secure settings, and nursing and residential homes.

This curriculum will take effect for all new specialty trainees by September 2024.
