What is your professional background?

I am a DCP, but I now own and run my own company. It is a dental agency employing DCPs to work across different practices and running dental training programmes that are dental specific.

What free CPD activities do you do?

Usually a course that I can attend with other likeminded dental professionals, online CPD is not an acceptable method for me as I don’t really feel that the learning has depth. If I try to remember the content of articles afterwards I can’t, and so this option holds no value for me personally.

Have you ever delivered free CPD in-house to your colleagues? Does your team contribute ideas?

Yes we have delivered free CPD, and yes we get a full feedback questionnaire and evaluate the learning that has taken place and what can be improved in future training days.

How do you decide/choose what activities to complete?

We ask our employees first and follow with shared subject topics that are included in several members personal development plans (PDPs). In addition we consider the core CPD topics and include those also.

How do you feel your career has benefited from completing CPD?

I find it very fulfilling and it gives my professional status and responsibilities more meaning. It is definitely necessary for everyone to continue to grow in their profession as time progresses.

What would you say to DCP registrants to encourage them to complete their CPD?

You really do need to develop self-awareness, insight and reflective skills to tailor the subjects you do to your needs, as well as revisiting the subjects you enjoy. This can be helped by the use of a PDP and several focus sessions per year to evaluate your progress. This will help you to gain self-confidence and realise that your personal growth is as important as working as part of a team. It will also help you to be assured that you are staying focused on the principles set by the GDC in its ‘Standards for dental professionals’ guidance.

If you manage or lead a team, what support have you given to colleagues who may be new to CPD or coming up to the end of their first cycle?

Each and every member of my team is encouraged to use a PDP and they are given a template to make their own. These are used to collate all of their thoughts and aspirations, thus helping them to ask for training and development support during appraisal reviews. As long as there is relevance to their current role, or development plans for their role, it is a very positive way to tie CPD and performance review into this document and track progress. The CPD requirements are noted and support given to make sure that all courses are booked or at least sourced for the DCPs in my team.

What is your professional background?

I am a dental hygiene therapist and dental hygiene tutor. I am on the executive council for the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy and I am a Fitness to Practise panel member at the General Dental Council.

What free CPD activities do you do?

• CPD organised by companies;
• CPD at the BDA Conference;
• CPD in journals;
• Various, non-verifiable CPD, through journals and online research.

Have you ever delivered free CPD in-house to your colleagues? Does your team contribute ideas?

I personally don't deliver CPD in-house - but I am involved with the BSDHT and organise CPD for hygienists and therapists.

How do you decide/choose what activities to complete?

Topic and location are my first priorities and then I consider the cost.

How do you feel your career has benefited from completing CPD?

The mandatory aspect of CPD has made me much more pro-active in seeking out core topic courses. I have been more structured in recording the CPD I do.

What would you say to DCP registrants to encourage them to complete their CPD?

 

It definitely helps you keep up to date and is often inspirational and thought provoking.  It puts your registration at risk if you don't participate.

If you manage or lead a team, what support have you given to colleagues who may be new to CPD or coming to the end of their first cycle?

 

I think time needs to be built into work to allow us to inform DCPs about what they need to do and how to do it.  Many of the nurses in the practice are reluctant to give up their 'free time' to do courses.

What free CPD activities do you do?

1. Reviewing products and materials in-house;
2. Reading about new designs via the web;
3. Developing protocols for use of new materials;
4. Deciding how best to carry out the provision of laboratory appliances;
5. Updating laboratory health and safety forms;
6. Mentoring new people;
7. Training new people;
8. Helping individuals with CPD questions and answers;
9. Using YouTube as a source of dental appliance videos; 

Have you ever delivered free CPD in-house to your colleagues? Does your team contribute ideas?

Yes, whenever I visit dental laboratories and am then asked to clarify points or explain areas. I use Skype to link-up with other people and share ideas and problems about management issues. Giving individuals a small job to find out the current best practice and sharing that at training events. Encouraging others to share ideas with colleagues through presentations or writing a ‘walk through article’. Link learning to formal research material and share at breaks. Reading magazines kept in a box for reference.

How do you decide/choose what activities to complete?

I consider what interests me that is new e.g. digital technology. I also think about what I need to do for the regulator (General Dental Council) although my professional body, the Dental Technologists’ Association (DTA) ensures coverage of the verifiable CPD needs in its bi-monthly magazine.

I also use occasional ‘self-reflection’, using the what, when, why, who and how questions for self-development.

How do you feel your career has benefited from completing CPD?

I feel it keeps me updated personally and gives me an understanding of current dental provision. It gives me the appropriate knowledge to be able to review the trends as well as the ability to talk with other dental colleagues and understand their needs.

What would you say to DCP registrants to encourage them to complete their CPD?

Most dental technicians are already carrying out CPD, but do not realise that it can be logged as such. There is much that they are doing daily that should be logged as CPD.
For example:
1. Reflection on an event e.g. when someone cut their hand in the laboratory and we noted that the Fist Aid box items were out of date.
2. Making new demonstration models of cases.
3. Reviewing a new product: Who, How and Why we should use it.
4. Discussions about working practices in the laboratory and how we can improve our work or do it more effectively.
5. Reviewing and sharing new learning from events like Dental Showcase.
6. Having an external person audit your work areas and then dealing with required changes.
7. Discussing the work and plans for future development.
8. Professional bodies provide verifiable CPD monthly and the DTA has even provided a catch-up CD.
9. CPD can be other activities such as health and safety, Scouts activities, local voluntary links etc. that have a spin-off into working practice.
10. Talking with trade reps about new products.

If you manage or lead a team, what support have you given to colleagues who may be new to CPD or coming up to the end of their first cycle?

The Dental Technologists’ Association has developed a range of support materials to help a) keep members up to date, b) bring them news and c) provide a range of verifiable CPD. We all manage or lead at different times and supporting a new trainee, explaining to the driver or working with colleagues in the dental surgery can also be CPD. The admin side of our jobs, knowing about confidentiality, updates from the MHRA and sharing updates on health and safety can all be counted as CPD.
