Prosthodontics

Prosthodontics involves the reconstruction and replacement of teeth and associated soft and hard tissue defects or pathology using prostheses that may be tissue, tooth and implant supported.

It encompasses the restoration of teeth and supporting oral structures that have been affected by disease, trauma, and developmental conditions. Prosthodontics plays a major role in oral related quality of life, with the loss of teeth and associated tissues having both functional and aesthetic effects. 

Specialist care is typically carried out alongside general dental care. Specialist prosthodontists lead and deliver prosthodontic services, and accept, plan, and treat complex cases. They collaborate with other specialist colleagues, if necessary, determining the viability of teeth with a view to delivering the best possible evidence-based treatment. 

The next curriculum will take effect for all new specialty trainees by September 2024.
