Quality Assurance of Specialty Education

15 December, 2022

In 2019/2020 we commenced a programme of quality assurance of specialty training and assessments. All activity is scheduled for completion by the end of 2022, with reports planned for publication, on the GDC website, by the end of Q1 2023.

All reports are published on the Dental Specialty training page.

The table below outlines the timeframes for the quality assurance activity:

2019-20202020-20212021-2022
NHS Education for Scotland (NES) London and Kent, Surrey, and Sussex (London KSS)Health Education England East Midlands (HEE EM)
Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW)Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England)
Health Education England (HEE Yorkshire and Humber)The Royal College of Radiologists (RCS Radiologists)
Health Education England South West, Thames Valley and Wessex (HEE SW)The Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow (RCS Glasgow)

Health Education England North West (HEE NW)
Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA)

Once we have quality assured statutory education bodies and Royal Colleges involved in dental specialty education, we will consider the most effective means of ongoing monitoring going forward. This may include a level of regular monitoring and/or exception reporting. This is an iterative process, and we are keen to ensure that our approach to quality assurance is proportionate and effective ensuring that all specialist dentists listed by the GDC have fulfilled their curricula requirements.
