Nigel graduated as a dentist from Guy’s Dental Hospital in 1975 and worked in a number of NHS dental practices in London and Kent before eventually returning to Guy’s as a full-time Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. He also undertook outreach clinics in District General Hospitals in Brighton and Ipswich. As a consultant Nigel became involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education, and for 10 years was the clinical lead, one day a week, for final year dental students attending the “Polyclinic” at St Thomas’ Hospital. Nigel’s interest in education led to him becoming the Dental Tutor to Guy’s Dental Hospital and teaching and training became the most rewarding part of his career. In 2002 Nigel reduced his clinical and student education commitment in order to become an Associate Postgraduate Dental Dean, responsible for the quality management of hospital-based dental training in London. This involved overseeing the recruitment and training of speciality registrars and dental core trainees, previously known as senior house officers.
