Taking the ORE
The ORE has two parts which must be taken – and passed – in order. The purpose of Part 1 is to test candidates’ application of knowledge to clinical practice and Part 2 is designed for candidates to demonstrate practical clinical skills.
We have guidance documents to help you prepare for the exams as well as navigate your way through the exams process.
You will be allowed four attempts for Part 1, and four attempts for Part 2. If you fail either Part 1 or Part 2 of the exam four times you will not be allowed to sit the exam again. You will also have to pass Part 2 within five years of first sitting Part 1.
How much does each exam cost?
The fees for the ORE are:
- Part 1 - £600
- Part 2 - £2250
There is also a one-off fee for the Medical Emergencies component should you need to take this on its own. This will be £300.
PLEASE NOTE: These fees have been approved by an outside government body called the Privy Council. The regulations came into force on 16 July 2007 and can be found under 'Rules' on this website.
Where are the exams held?
All sittings of the ORE will be in Central London.
Part 1 will be held at King's College, London.

When do I find out my result?
Your exam results will be sent to you by email within 15 working days of the exam.
Part 1 results - you will be given a mark out of 50 for Paper 1 and for Paper 2, as well as an overall pass or fail award. As the exam is taken at a computer, the results are calculated as soon as you click 'submit'.
There is no room for error in this marking system and so we do not offer the opportunity of questioning the marks awarded. It is not possible to provide you with feedback on your performance in this exam.
Part 2 results - You will be given a pass or fail award for each component of the exam as well as an overall pass or fail award. Your results email will have an attachment giving you feedback on your performance in each component. This consists of statements on your performance or an indication of your strengths and weaknesses.
Please remember that we do not accept appeals against results nor disagreements with our examiners' decisions. An appeal will not lead to results being changed.
If you feel that your exams procedure was severely defective or that you were placed at a disadvantage when compared to other candidates during the exam, please provide us with your feedback. We will investigate all genuine grievances submitted within 28 days of the exam.
