Individual examination feedback

A large number of candidates have requested personalised feedback about their examination marks.Originally a decision was made to provide candidates with simply a Pass or Fail mark, since the role of the GDC is an ‘examiner’ and not an ‘educator’. However, the Overseas Registration Examination Board has subsequently agreed that an appropriate level of feedback should be offered to candidates in order to highlight areas where they may have underperformed in an examination.

For the Part 1 examination, providing feedback means changing the software used to calculate scores. This is so that it can reflect areas of improvement which will be based on your electronically generated results.

To mark the Part 2 examination, examiners make notes on candidates’ performance using a mark sheet.  Unfortunately, providing feedback is not as simple as releasing the notes as they currently exist. At the moment, as well as the notes on a candidates’ performance, the examiner’s mark sheets contain vital information relating to the questions and structure of the examination, and releasing these would risk the security of the examination question bank. It was noted by the board that the feedback should not undermine the integrity of the examination. Therefore, the mark sheets will need to be adapted to fit the purpose of providing feedback.Changing these mark sheets will not be a quick process and requires discussions between the GDC and the examination centres in order to facilitate this change.

As you may be aware, due to lower candidate numbers, there is a break in the ORE Part 2 timetable during June, July and August. We anticipate that the development of these new feedback processes will take place during this time, to be implemented later in the year.We will also be taking this opportunity to explore the possibility of providing simple feedback to candidates from past examinations.

Whilst this does not address an immediate need for feedback, please understand that adapting our processes to respond to these feedback requests requires a significant change to both computer software and to the way in which results are recorded. As such, it will take time to implement properly and your continued patience is very much appreciated during this time.
