How to apply for restoration

If you have never been registered with the GDC before and you would like to make a first application for GDC registration, please view the apply for registration section.

Information for dental hygienists and dental therapists

If you have been previously registered with the Council on the Rolls of Dental Auxilliaries and are not registered at the moment you will have to submit a new application to the Dental Care Professionals Register which opened on 31 July 2006. 

Information for dentists - how to restore your name to the Dentist Register

If your registration has lapsed, because you have been working abroad, taking a career break, or you have been removed from the Register for non completion of CPD or for not paying the annual retention fee you will need to:

  • complete a restoration application form;
  • undergo a medical examination and provide a character reference;
  • pay a fee
  • provide evidence that you have completed the required amount of continuing professional development (CPD);
  • if you were practising overseas whilst your name was off the Register, you will have to provide a letter of good standing from the relevant authority of the country/state in which you were last working;
  • if you were practising in the UK whilst your name was erased from the Register, you and your employer will need to provide a letter of explanation. Your application will then be considered by the GDC Registrar;
  • if you have had a significant absence from practising dentistry you should contact the Registration Department to discuss your application before submitting the application form.

Restoration after erasure by the Professional Conduct Committee

If you have been erased from the Dentists Register by the Professional Conduct Committee, you must wait at least ten months before applying for restoration. You will need two certificates of identity and good character, and a certificate of good physical and mental health. You may also submit up to six testimonials from persons of standing in support of the application.

To assist the Professional Conduct Committee consider these applications, the GDC's Solicitor first recalls the evidence which led to the erasure. The dentist applying to be restored to the Register may then address the Committee and call witnesses in support of the application. The applicant may be represented by Counsel or a solicitor at the hearing.

How to restore your name to the list of temporary registrants

If you have previously held temporary registration but have not been registered for a year or more you will need to restore your name to the Register. You will need to complete a Restoration application form for your next contract of employment and provide a certificate of good standing from the dental authority of the country in which you were last working as a dentist. You will also be asked to present evidence of any continuing professional development (CPD) you have completed - please refer to the CPD information we sent you in your initial registration pack or visit the CPD section of our website. Please email our Maintenance and Compliance Team to GDCRegistration@gdc-uk.org  confirming your previous registration number and details of your employment offer for one of the approved training posts to request a Restoration application form and details of the restoration procedure.
