Business  Names

If you intend to use a business name which includes the word 'dental' or 'dentistry', you must first obtain a letter of non-objection from the General Dental Council (GDC).

This is because these two names are restricted under the Company and Business Names regulations 1981.

To obtain a letter of non-objection from the GDC please email us stating the proposed business name and business activity email:

It would help us process your enquiry faster if you included the following information:

  • Proposed business/company name
  • Business activity, eg. dental suppliers, dental practice, dental laboratory
  • Full postal address
  • Your full name and (if registered with the GDC) your registration number.

Please refer to the frequently asked questions for more information on business and company names.

We aim to respond to all business name requests within 10 working days via post.

On 23 April 2008, the Standards Committee confirmed the Council's current policy for assessing business name applications, namely that the proposed name must make clear the nature of the services to be provided. It was agreed that this policy should be enforced for all applications from a specific commencement date. Therefore as of 3 June 2008, all business name applications are to be assessed this way.
