Born in a Pit Row near Annfield Plain in County Durham, Grace Alderson now lives near Halifax in West Yorkshire.  Her working life is split between West Yorkshire and London.
 
Grace left school at 16 and gained most of her qualifications including a PhD on a part-time basis and became a university academic. Now, although formally retired, she remains a part-time professor of medical microbiology and has many years experience in education, the NHS and small business environments.
 
During her full-time professional life she gained extensive experience in academic management and until 2004 was the pro-vice chancellor (senior PVC, resources) at the University of Bradford.
 
Her current appointments include being a member of the Lord Chancellor’s advisory committee in Bradford, a non-executive director and board member of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and a governor of Dixon's City Academy.
