When will my registration run out?
Temporary registration is granted for the period requested by you on your application form and is clearly shown on your temporary registration direction. You must not continue to work once your direction has expired.
Where can I work?
You can work only in the institution(s) and position stated on your temporary registration direction. You cannot work in any other institution other than that stated on your direction.
When do I need to pay my registration fee?
The date of payment of your registration fee is determined from a cumulative total of your period(s) of registration. Your fee will be due on completion of each year of registration. You can pay the fee by cheque (payable to the 'General Dental Council') or by Visa or MasterCard.
It is less than a year since I last held temporary registration - how do I renew my registration?
If your current period of registration has expired, you must complete a new application form for your next contract of employment - please contact us to request a form. This applies even if you are continuing employment in the same post at the same hospital. If you are required to work in an additional hospital as part of a current period of registration (where the hospital was not indicated on your original application form), you will need to complete a new application form. You cannot take up a new post until you have received a direction from the GDC.
I have previously held temporary registration but have not been registered for a year or more - how do I restore my name to the Register?
You must complete a new application form (please contact us to request a form) for your next contract of employment and provide a certificate of good standing from the dental authority of the country in which you were last working as a dentist. You will also be asked to present evidence of any continuing professional development (CPD) you have completed - please refer to the CPD information we sent you in your initial registration pack or visit the CPD section of our website.
How long does it take to process an application for temporary registration?
We aim to process all applications within 5-10 working days from the date of receipt, but applications may take longer during busy periods. This applies to first applications and applications for renewal of registration.
Can I do locum work?
Yes, provided that the post is approved by the GDC for the purpose of temporary registration and that the duration of the post is no shorter than the minimum required period - see next question. Locum appointments at SHO grade are permitted provided it is a post approved by one of the Royal Surgical Colleges of the UK. Locum appointments at Specialist Registrar grade are permitted, provided the Postgraduate Dental Dean confirms the post is a recognised Locum Appointment for Training (LAT) post. Locum Appointment for Service (LAS) posts at SpR grade are not permitted.
What are the minimum and maximum periods that I can be registered for at any one time?
Temporary registration is granted for periods not less than 3 months and for periods not exceeding 12 months, up to a total maximum period of five years.
Can I have more than one temporary registration direction at any one time?
Yes. You would need to complete an application form for each period of registration required (please contact us to request a form).
How do I stop my registration if I stop working before the expiry date on my direction?
You must inform us in writing within 10 days of the date that you stopped working and provide a letter from medical staffing confirming that your employment contract has been terminated.
What do I do if I am ill and am not at work for a period for which I am registered?
The GDC will consider discounting a period of illness which materially affects your period of training. It will be your responsibility to notify us of the period of illness within 10 working days of returning to clinical practice. The GDC will not grant a refund of time for an application made after this period. A period of illness will not be taken to have materially affected your training unless it is continuous and exceeds one month in any contract period. Applications for a refund of time based on illness should be supported by a letter from medical staffing confirming that you were not at work during this period and a letter from the supervising consultant confirming that progress in training was significantly affected by the absence.
Can I have a refund of time for maternity/paternity leave?
Yes. A request for a refund of time on the basis of maternity or paternity leave must be made before you go on leave and must be supported by a letter from medical staffing.
Can periods of study leave be discounted from a period for which I am registered?
No. Study leave is included in your five-year aggregate period of temporary registration.
Can I have a refund of time for annual leave?
No. Annual leave is included in your five-year aggregate period of temporary registration.
Can I have an extension to my five-year aggregate period of temporary registration?
Extensions will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. If you intend to stay in the UK for longer than five years then you should aim to take and complete all parts of the GDC's International Qualifying Examination at the earliest available opportunity within your five-year period, so that you qualify for full registration.
Do I need to do continuing professional development?
Yes, you must do (and keep records of) 250 hours of continuing professional development over a five-year cycle. At least 75 of the 250 hours that you do must be verifiable CPD. Please refer to the CPD information we sent you in your initial registration pack or visit the CPD section of our website.
How can I get a Certificate of Current Professional Status (also known as a Certificate of Good Standing)?
You must make a written request to the Council by completing the request form. The request form can be downloaded from the panel on the top right hand side of this page. The certificate will be issued within 10 working days.
A Certificate of Current Professional Status (CCPS) is issued to professionals who are currently registered with the GDC and who wish to register in another country to practise their profession. This certificate was previously known as a Certificate of Good Standing (CGS).
If you were previously registered with the GDC or are on temporary registration with the GDC you will be issued with a letter of good standing. To request a letter of good standing please also download and complete the request form from the panel on the top right hand side of this page.
How can I update my registered details?
You can update your registered name by informing the GDC in writing. The name you practise under must be the name under which you are registered with the GDC.
You can update your registered address by informing the GDC in writing or by phone. When you call the GDC to change your registered address with the GDC you will be asked a security question. Your registered address must be a current address where the GDC can contact you.
Please note that your registered details are public information.
