End of CPD cycle guidance
A condition of retention on the Dentists or DCP Register is compliance with the CPD requirements over a five year period.
Dentists are required to undertake 250 hours of CPD with 75 hours being verifiable and DCPs are required to undertake 150 hours of CPD with 50 hours being verifiable.
Key facts
- By law, all dentists must complete 250 hours of CPD every five years, 75 of which must be verifiable to remain on the UK Dentists Register
- By law, all DCPs must complete 150 hours of CPD every five-years, 50 of which must be verifiable to remain on the UK DCP Register.
- Dentists and DCPs must maintain their own CPD records
- An annual statement of the CPD hours completed must be submitted each year
- The GDC will monitor compliance with the requirements by random sampling of dental professionals CPD records
- Failure to comply with the requirements may lead to removal from the Dentists or DCP Register
- All dentists or DCPs taking time off the Register must demonstrate compliance with CPD when they apply to restore.
Confirmation of compliance
At the end of a CPD cycle dentists or DCPs will be asked to confirm their compliance with the CPD requirements. They need to return a declaration of the hours of CPD that they have completed over the last five years.
If following the end of their CPD cycle a dentist or dental care professional does not confirm their compliance when this is first asked for, they will then need to send in evidence of their compliance to us.
CPD audit
In the year after a CPD cycle ends a sample of dentists and dental care professionals who confirmed their compliance will be asked to send in evidence of the CPD they have completed for auditing.
Restoration to the Register
Dentists or dental care professionals who do not comply with the CPD requirements and are removed from the Register for non-compliance can no longer work as dentists or DCPs in the UK. These individuals need to complete an application for restoration available at this link, if they wish to restore their name to the Register.
