How to be registered
What does it mean to be a registered dental professional? First and foremost, you must work to the standards set by the General Dental Council.
The GDC is in the business of protecting patients and to do this we must ensure all dental professionals uphold our standards. These standards form the basis of how we expect you to conduct yourself, your business and your professional life.
But they also protect you and the integrity of your profession.
We hold registers for dentists and other dental care professionals (clinical dental technicians, dental nurses, dental hygienists, dental technicians, dental therapists and orthodontic therapists), and it’s only by meeting our standards that you can remain on them. What happens if you don't meet our standards?
If you don’t pay your fees on time, maintain your CPD or have indemnity cover, you will be removed from the Register.
Deadlines for annual retention fees are as follows:
- Dentists – 31 December
- All other dental professionals – 31 July
If your health, professional conduct or performance are cause for concern, your fitness to practise can be called into question. A number of your fellow professionals sit on committees that have the power to remove you from the register as a result of complaints from the public or other fellow professionals.
Specialist Lists
You can also apply to join one of the GDC’s specialist lists, which make it easier for the public and other professionals to find you if you specialise in a particular aspect of dentistry.
