Sheila qualified as a dental therapist in 1981 and a dental hygienist in 1982. She worked in the Community Dental Service as a dental therapist and in Saudi Arabia as a dental hygienist before taking up a post of dental hygiene tutor at Cardiff Dental Hospital. In 1996, Sheila was involved in setting up the dental therapy training programme at the University of Wales College of Medicine where she worked as a principal dental therapy tutor.
In 2004, Sheila was appointed principal lecturer at Portsmouth University where she is currently course leader for the BSc (Hons) in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy programme.
