Michael Martin qualified as a dentist in 1968 from Birmingham University. He worked in dental practice from 1968 to 1973, at the University of Birmingham as a Medical Research Council Research Fellow from 1973 to 1977, and at the University of Sheffield as a lecturer in oral microbiology from 1977 to 1983. From 1983 to September 2006 he has was working as a senior lecturer/honorary consultant at the University of Liverpool.
Michael has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and ten books. He has a PhD (University of Birmingham, 1979), BA (Open University, 1979), and Membership (1990) and Fellowship (1993) of the Royal College of Pathologists. In 2000 Michael was awarded honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners (UK) for his services to dentistry. In 2004 he was awarded the MBE for services to dentistry.
