John Chope works in general practice serving a rural community in Devon. His special interest is helping exceptionally apprehensive and phobic patients and solving complex and problematic cases. He also works as a hypnotherapist.
He has past experience as a dental technician, as a neurophysiologist researcher in the USA and as a physiology lecturer in the Sudan where he also helped establish the Khartoum dental school.
In the 1990s John established and chaired Firmadenta, an international wholesale dental supply company. He is a past chairman of the GDC Professional Conduct Committee, chaired the Confederation of Dental Employers for 10 years, was a consultant for the Veterinary Drug Company plc and serves on numerous dental committees, working groups and advisory bodies. He is a member of the editorial board of Dentistry magazine, is treasurer of the South-West Division of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners, serves on the Family Health Service Appeal Panel and on the Council of the Dental Practitioners' Association and is a magistrate. He also runs a specialist building company and a 500-acre mixed farm.
