Joan Aitken is a solicitor and has practised in public authorities and private practice. She was the Scottish Prisons Complaints Commissioner (Ombudsman) from 1999 to 2003, and is currently the Traffic Commissioner for Scotland.
She is a former part-time Chairman of the Employment Tribunals (Scotland), Disability Appeal and Child Support Appeal Tribunals. She is a former member of the Scottish Consumer Council and the Council of the Law Society of Scotland.
