Hew Mathewson has been President of the General Dental Council since April 2003. A member of the GDC since 1996 he has also chaired the Professional Conduct Committee and served on the Health, Education, Postgraduate and Ethics Committees. Hew continues to work part time in general dental practice in Edinburgh and had training in oral surgery before setting up his own practice in 1977.
He has previously been a part time undergraduate teacher in Edinburgh Dental School, Assistant Director of Dental Studies at the University of Edinburgh and a Regional General Dental Practice Vocational Training Adviser. He has also chaired the British Dental Association's Scottish General Dental Services Committee and served as Vice-Chair of the UK General Dental Services Committee. Hew was a member of the editorial board of the British Dental Journal from 1992 to 2003. He is the immediate past President of the Conference of Order of Assimilated Bodies of Dental Practitioners in Europe (CODE), the organisation that brings together European dental regulators, a member and past Vice-Chair of the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence and a lay member of both the Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners and of the appeal panel for the Institute for Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Hew works regularly with many vocational dental practitioner groups and lectures widely.
