David Herbert has been Professor of Geography at the University of Wales (Swansea) since 1980 and is also currently Senior Pro Vice Chancellor. David's main areas of responsibility within the university have covered educational policy issues, estates and services.

David has served on the Sports Council for Wales for nine years. He is a member of the Welsh Joint Education Committee and the Institute of Welsh Affairs, and Director of the Wales National Pool and the Swansea Clinical School and Graduate Entry Medical School Project Board. He is a former Chair of the Swansea Crime Prevention Panel and has served as a school governor for Olchfa Comprehensive School and the former West Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education.

David's main academic research interests are social problems in cities, heritage tourism and literary places. He has authored and edited over twenty books and written numerous journal papers on these topics.
