Caroline trained as a medical laboratory technician. She subsequently worked in public relations at The Times and The Sunday Times. She was a non-executive director of South Buckinghamshire NHS Trust from 1992 to 1998, where she was a member of the Audit Committee and a Complaints Convenor. She has been Chairman of Aylesbury Vale Community Health Council and was a Governor of a Church of England Combined School for eight years.
Caroline has been a member of the Buckinghamshire Committee of Elisabeth Finn Care since 1983. She also works in a voluntary capacity for the Buckinghamshire County Museum and Art Gallery. In 1994 Caroline was awarded an OBE for political and public service.
