- 10 are members of the public. These lay members were originally appointed by the Queen, but this role was delegated to the NHS Appointments Commission in April 2005.
- 19 are dental professionals (15 dentists and 4 dental care professionals) who are elected by dental professionals.
Hew Mathewson, a dentist member, is President of the Council.
The Council is supported by a staff team of around 120, headed up by Chief Executive and Registrar, Duncan Rudkin and the Executive Management Team.
The Fitness to Practise Panel
The panels which make decisions on a dental professional's fitness to practise - and fitness to remain on our registers - are drawn from an independent Fitness to Practise Panel.
Appointments Committee
An independent group of dental professionals and members of the public make up our Appointments Committee, which appoints members to our Fitness to Practise Panel.
Education inspectors
A panel of inspectors carry out GDC inspections of education programmes.
