Principles of managing interests

The GDC has produced new guidance, Principles of managing interests, on how Council members, staff and others acting on behalf of Council should manage their interests when carrying out their GDC roles. This novel approach, focusing on policy and protocol rather than on what not to do, gives clear guidelines, placing full responsibility on the individual and emphasising professional values. It comes into force on 1 July 2007.

The booklet is a special edition in the Standards for dental professional series. The title ‘Managing Interests’ was chosen deliberately. All those working for, or on behalf of, the GDC have interests in the GDC’s work but many of these do not exclude people from debate. In fact, people’s experience and background often make a valid contribution to debates. The booklet has been designed to help people take account of those interests that might adversely influence proceedings and the attendant Register of Interests will empower anyone who believes that someone else has an interest to say so.
