Ian Jackson, who took up the post on 5 January 2009, will manage the GDC’s activities in Scotland, working with the Scottish Parliament, members of the public and the dental profession.
The appointment will help us better protect UK dental patients by more frequently and effectively engaging with the people of Scotland and Scottish healthcare delivery and policy.
Commenting on his appointment Ian Jackson said:
“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to make a real impact on the GDC’s presence in Scotland by leading the development of the Council’s activities here."
“My aim is to help people in Scotland better understand what the GDC does and how we can help them. Scotland is different in that it has its own system of government and professionals tend to interact differently. One of the challenges will be working effectively within this framework. Another challenge will be ensuring that the GDC gets in front of the key opinion formers and develops good working relationships with the right people.
“I will be working to help the GDC understand and navigate the country’s political and professional environment as well as making sure they are aware of any relevant issues that could arise. I look forward to going out and engaging with Scotland-based patients and professionals as well as the Scottish Parliament, other regulators and agencies in the country.”
GDC President Hew Mathewson said:
“As the first GDC representative living and working in Scotland and the new Director ‘on the spot’, Ian’s appointment is an important one for the GDC. We’re committed to providing regulation which is consistent across the UK, whilst relevant to the way in which healthcare is delivered in different countries, systems and contexts.”
“Ian joins us at an important time. His work will further enable us to further build and maintain effective GDC engagement in Scotland so that we can relate better – and respond better – to Scottish-based patients and dental professionals.”
Ian was most recently Partnership Director at BT Scotland and worked for BT from 1982 in a variety of roles. He sits as a ministerial nominee on General Teaching Council, Scotland and is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh. Ian was appointed MBE in January 2005 for services to education in Scotland.
