General Dental Council

We are the organisation which regulates dental professionals in the United Kingdom.  All dentists, dental hygienists, dental therapists, clinical dental technicians and orthodontic therapists must be registered with us to work in the UK. From 31 July 2008 all dental nurses and dental technicians must be registered with the GDC to work in the UK.

We are delivering a modernisation programme to extend our powers and to make us a more efficient and effective regulator. These reforms are strengthening our role in protecting patients and promoting high standards of dentistry.

The Council

The Council has 29 members - 10 members of the public, who are appointed, and 19 dental professionals (15 dentists and 4 dental care professionals) elected by the profession.
